THERAPY TECHNIQUES

BEHAVIOR THERAPY/PCIT

Behavior Therapy is an established set of principles and strategies used to encourage desired behavior and discourage undesirable behavior. For some kinds of disorders, particularly ADHD and ODD, one-on-one “talk therapy” is insufficient to achieve improved behavior.

My goal is to teach parents these principles and establish specific strategies that work best for their child. It is important for parents to understand that although this approach has been shown to be very effective it requires significant effort and persistence in the early stages.

DBT/CBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a treatment approach that uses several different treatment strategies to help individuals learn and master effective skills for creating a life that they love. DBT has two components. One is specific skills areas and the other is behavior analysis used to identify behaviors that interfere with achieving a life that you love and creating replacement behaviors that work better.

The four different skill areas are:

  • Mindfulness

  • Distress Tolerance

  • Emotion Regulation

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness
